Wildlife Overpass Nears Completion on I-17
In a bid to enhance safety for both animals and motorists, the Arizona Department of Transportation is progressing with a wildlife overpass on Interstate 17. Positioned south of Flagstaff, this innovative structure is slated to be operational by next fall.
The project, which carries a price tag of $15.8 million, commenced in May. A significant milestone has been reached with the pouring of a concrete deck across the 100-foot expanse. This deck will soon be adorned with soil, grass, and plants, crafting a natural pathway for wildlife to traverse the busy interstate safely.
Construction activities are currently paused for the winter season, but efforts will pick back up next year to ensure timely completion.
Statistical data from ADOT highlights the necessity of this overpass; the designated section of I-17 recorded over half of all wildlife-related collisions in a 40-mile range between 2018 and 2022. This makes the overpass not just a structural endeavor, but a crucial safety measure.
