Gilbert Public Schools May Close Pioneer Elementary Amid Enrollment Drop

Gilbert Public Schools Faces Decision on Closing Pioneer Elementary

As school districts across the region grapple with declining student numbers, Gilbert Public Schools is contemplating the closure of Pioneer Elementary School by the end of the academic year. This proposal aligns with similar moves by other districts responding to reduced enrollment.

The governing board of the district is scheduled to make a decision regarding the fate of Pioneer Elementary on January 27. During a recent meeting, Assistant Superintendent Jason Martin highlighted that Pioneer has been the smallest school in the district for the past three years, with its classrooms being significantly underutilized.

“You could currently take all the students in Pioneer Elementary and if you evenly distributed them throughout the classrooms at Pioneer, it would average seven students per classroom,” Martin explained.

With only two classes available per grade level, the school is facing challenges. Martin noted, “Within the next year or two we will have, if Pioneer Elementary were to stay open, a grade level or two that would start to only have one class per grade level, which we know makes it incredibly hard when trying to meet all of the diverse needs of our student learners.”

In recent developments, late 2025 saw both the Kyrene and Scottsdale districts announcing closures under similar circumstances.

The state Department of Education’s recent statistics reveal a trend of declining enrollment in traditional public schools, with current figures at 868,690, contrasting with 928,526 five years ago and 962,277 a decade prior.
