Rising Fuel Costs Impact Aviation, Flight Schools Face Tuition Hikes

As oil prices continue to climb, the ripple effect is felt across various sectors, especially in aviation. From pricier airline tickets to flight cancellations, the impact is widespread. For flight schools like Thrust Flight in Texas, this translates to potential increases in training costs.

Patrick Arnzen, CEO of Thrust Flight, highlights the financial strain, particularly noting that fuel accounts for a significant portion of training expenses. “It makes operating a business like mine incredibly difficult,” Arnzen remarked. “When you attribute 30% of the cost of a flight directly to fuel, it’s a big number.”

The flight school uses both aviation gas and jet fuel. According to International Air Transport Association data, jet fuel prices have more than doubled over the past year. However, avgas prices, which are crucial for piston-powered aircraft, are not tracked by the organization.

Arnzen mentioned that while his students currently pay a fixed fee for training, the sustained high cost of fuel might necessitate an increase in tuition fees next year. “Fuel prices affect us the same way it affects us at the gas pumps for our cars and for our trucks, so you know we’ve seen a huge increase in our fuel cost as we do flight training for all of our students,” he explained.

He plans to reassess the situation at the year’s end to determine any necessary changes to pricing.
