Addressing Attendance Issues in Tucson Schools
The Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) is tackling a significant challenge: nearly 40% of its students are chronically absent. This alarming rate has raised concerns among district officials, prompting a closer examination of attendance policies.
In Arizona, chronic absenteeism is characterized by students missing 10% or more of the school year, equating to at least 18 days of absence. Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo has highlighted a growing concern over the number of excused absences that contribute to this statistic.
