Protests at MacDill Air Force Base Lead to Arrests
On the morning of September 18, traffic outside MacDill Air Force Base was disrupted by demonstrators protesting Israel’s actions in Gaza. The protest led to the arrest of five individuals who were blocking the roadway, according to police reports.
At approximately 9:30 a.m., the protest took place at the base gate on South Dale Mabry Highway. Participants held large banners with messages such as “Free Palestine” and “Veterans Against Genocide.” Law enforcement stated that the demonstrators’ actions posed a risk to the safety of both vehicular and pedestrian movement.
The Tampa police issued a statement explaining, “Officers urged protesters to share their message from the grass median or sidewalks and issued multiple warnings that arrests would follow if they remained in the roadway. Five people did not comply with officers’ commands.”
Footage from the scene reveals tensions between protesters and police. Some protesters could be heard calling the officers “a bunch of cowards” and asking for their names and badge numbers. One protester was notably arrested while sitting in the street.
The arrested individuals, comprising four women and one man, ranged in age from 22 to 71. They face charges of resisting an officer without violence, obstruction of street, sidewalk, or alley, and disobeying a police officer or fire department official.
MacDill Air Force Base, home to 12,000 active-duty military personnel and over 7,000 civilians, hosts major units such as United States Central Command and United States Special Operations Command.
This protest coincided with a recent report by the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry, which accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Navi Pillay, chair of the commission, stated, “The Commission finds that Israel is responsible for the commission of genocide in Gaza,” citing intent to destroy the Palestinian population through acts defined by the Genocide Convention.
