Lil Peep’s Mother Fights to Save Tucson Venue from Redevelopment

Tucson’s Iconic Venue Faces Uncertain Future Amid Housing Development Plans

The Rock, a beloved music venue in midtown Tucson, has become the focal point of a heated discussion about urban development. Plans for a new housing complex threaten to replace the venue, which holds a significant place in both local culture and the hearts of fans worldwide.

Liza Womack, who resides in New York, has never set foot in Tucson nor visited the site. Yet, she was emotionally stirred upon learning about the potential fate of The Rock. It was here that her son, Gustav Åhr—known to the world as Lil Peep—tragically passed away from an accidental overdose at the age of 21, just before a scheduled performance. Today, admirers continue to honor his memory at a memorial located along Park Avenue.

The proposed housing project aligns with the city’s middle housing amendment, which allows for the construction of duplexes, triplexes, four-plexes, townhouses, and cottage courts in most residential zones, excluding those designated as “rural residential.”

Meanwhile, Tucson’s sports scene is experiencing changes as well. A major Mexican baseball league franchise, formerly based in Navojoa, Sonora, has announced its relocation to the United States, rebranding itself as the Tucson Baseball Team.

In other developments, Beale infrastructure has plans for a data center on a 290-acre site in southeast Tucson. This initiative, which was recently discussed by the county board, promises to bring various benefits to the community.

Additionally, a notable land sale was finalized with Pima County supervisors unanimously agreeing to sell over 400 acres to the National Park Service.

As we approach the end of the year, reflections on notable Arizonans who passed away in 2025 have surfaced. One such figure is Ernesto Portillo, a celebrated Spanish-language radio broadcaster in Tucson, whose career spanned five decades.
