Recall Effort Targets Buckeye School Board President Amid Ongoing Tensions

Amidst escalating tensions, a coalition of parents, educators, and community members has initiated a recall campaign targeting the president of the Buckeye Liberty Elementary School District’s board.

Just days after the board’s decision to remove its interim superintendent, this development marks another chapter in the ongoing conflict between district officials and community members.

Earlier efforts this year saw the community amassing signatures to remove former President Bryan Parks and current Vice President Kris Kenyon, citing a lack of support for educators under their leadership.

The decision by the Buckeye Liberty Elementary School District board to terminate the interim superintendent’s contract has not been well-received by many within the community.

Parks eventually stepped down, citing privacy invasions and threats: “Due to the invasion of my personal privacy, including relentless attacks and threats against myself, family and my business ventures, I must make a difficult decision to step down.” Despite his resignation, parents believe a successful recall was imminent.

Following Parks’ departure, Maricopa County School Superintendent Shelli Boggs appointed Michael Todd to fill the vacant board position. Some community members opposed this decision, questioning Todd’s dedication to their children’s best interests.

In response to the recall initiative, Todd described the effort as driven by “a fringe group of disgruntled former employees and activists who are not interested in holding administrators and teachers to account for low student proficiency.” He emphasized his commitment to high educational standards, stating: “Every policy and direction of this Board is to ensure the highest quality of education, accountability and safety of our students. I am committed to do everything necessary to make that happen. Recall campaigns cost me personally time and money as well as taking tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars from the district and the classroom.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: The story has been updated to clarify that while Todd was appointed to the board by Boggs, his elevation to board president was a decision made by the board itself. Additional details about Parks’ resignation have also been included.
