Gov. Hobbs Appoints Jimmy McCain to Arizona Board of Regents

In a recent political development, Gov. Katie Hobbs has appointed Jimmy McCain, the youngest son of the late political figure Sen. John McCain, to the Arizona Board of Regents. This decision highlights Jimmy McCain’s diverse background and connection to the state.

According to a statement issued by Hobbs, McCain’s credentials as “a veteran, a businessman, and native Arizonan” make him a strong candidate to foster educational growth throughout Arizona. His military service, which includes deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, adds to his distinguished profile.

McCain’s academic ties to the Arizona State University system, where he earned a bachelor’s and one of his master’s degrees, further prepared him for this role. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in education.

However, Jimmy McCain was not initially the governor’s choice for this position. The role was first offered to Liz Archuleta, a resident of Flagstaff, but her appointment was stalled due to a lack of action by the Senate, leading to her resignation after a year.

Despite the hurdles, Hobbs’ press aide, Liliana Soto, emphasized that McCain’s party affiliation switch was not a factor in his appointment. Soto described McCain as having “a strong track record of leadership, collaboration, and service,” aligning with the governor’s vision for Arizona’s education system.

As McCain steps into this role, his potential confirmation by the Republican-led Senate remains uncertain. While his family’s legacy, particularly his father’s long-standing Republican career and presidential candidacy in 2008, might influence some opinions, his recent shift to the Democratic Party introduces an element of unpredictability.

The younger McCain’s political journey began with his departure from the GOP in 2016, prompted by Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy. He later registered as a Democrat, influenced by Trump’s controversial actions during a 2024 Arlington National Cemetery event and past remarks about his father.

Despite this complex political backdrop, McCain’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to advance higher education in northern Arizona. Gov. Hobbs expressed confidence in McCain’s suitability for the role, citing his “long track record of public service and knowledge of the unique challenges and opportunities of northern Arizona.”

Jimmy McCain expressed gratitude for the appointment, stating, “As the regent representing northern Arizona, I am excited to help strengthen higher education across our state and ensure that students from every background, especially those in our tribal and rural communities, have access to the educational tools they need to succeed.”

Doug Goodyear, the board’s chair, also commended McCain’s dedication to public service and his understanding of Arizona’s values, reinforcing the positive reception of this appointment within certain circles.

McCain’s military career began at 17 with the Marines, leading to an honorable discharge in 2010 after two deployments. He later joined the Army as an intelligence officer, continuing his service to the nation while building a robust profile that now serves as the foundation for his new role in Arizona’s educational governance.
